Ski Jewel shines brighter

Austria’s famous Ski Jewel area of the Tirol is on the up and up, getting more ski visitors and spending millions on upgrading lifts and facilities to cope.

The area, less than an hour from Innsbruck, combines the Tirolean charm of Alpbach and its over-the-mountain neighbouring ski villages of Niederau, Oberau, Auffach and Thierbach, all linked in the 145km lift circuit – and presenting Ski Easy terrain for all.

The villages and scenery are chocolate-box beautiful and Alpbach regularly wins the award of Austria’s prettiest village. The skiing is pretty good too.

This Winter season the popular Gmahbahn lift will be replaced with a new £3.2million six-seater chair lift, meaning easier, warmer and safer access to the ski pistes.
Also the new lift is a great asset for ski school groups and families, as to five children accompanied by one adult can be seated on the chair. The lift also offers skiers and boarders longer pistes and shorter lift times.

And a new £3million snow making facility is being created on the Schatzberg mountain above neighbouring Niederau, meaning 85 % of the Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau area will be serviced by snow making facilities.

Another innovation this coming season is special free ride weeks for groups (max. 6 people) equipped with backpack and integrated avalanche transceiver and led by an experienced ski guide to discover the area’s “wild” slopes. Freeride weekends cost only Euro 393 and are 10 – 18 January, 7– 14 February and 14 – 21 March.

A great attraction for families comes towards the end of the season with free ski 3-day ski passes for children accompanied by an adult. Applies to children born 1999 or later, the free passes are available from 14 March – 12 April.
