Les Contamines, France’s hidden ski gem is about to get much bigger. A new lift link will expand the existing ski area – from the top of the mountain to Megeve, virtually tripling the amount of ski runs. This will make the resort more attractive for distance skiers and combined with the alpine charm and French excellence will make for an exciting trip.
Our roving reporter Alex Perrett was stoked to find his visit co-incided with the biggest snowfall of the year, with the biggest snow-flakes I have ever seen smashing into my windscreen, and causing chaos on the roads.
One of the reasons I chose Les Contamines for a weekend break was its Ski Easy transfer – just an hour from Geneva airport I was on the mountain by the Friday afternoon and didn’t need to leave the resort until 2pm Monday to catch my return flight home.
Les Contamines is absolutely beautiful and full of French alpine charm. No high rise, purpose built, mass tourism apartments found here. ..One of the reasons the ski area seemed so empty. As someone used to skiing mega-resorts such as 3 Vallees and Portes du Soleil, I felt like I had the pistes all to myself.
This, as any skier will agree, is a glorious feeling. Les Contamines is where the Guides from Chamonix come to ski on their day off to avoid the crowds and hassle of Chamonix. As soon as reached the top of mountain I could see why this place is a powder hounds paradise – so much accessible off-piste. And I whooped with delight as I headed off for my first powder turns of the season. Much to the delight of Gilbert the Guide, who was happy to have someone to show off his favourite off-piste routes.
We skied and boarded in perfect conditions for three days and I hardly touched a piste. If you are looking for a short break destination or somewhere to take the family to avoid the crowds then I must recommend Les Contamines. Chalet Chovettaz, where the Brit owners, Chris and Fiona, are fabulous and will cater to you every need. They also have an outdoor hot tub with the most beautiful view, the perfect way to ease those aches and pains after a hard days snowboarding.
