French sports gear retailers Decathlon opened two more mega stores in the London region in the past week – one at Harlow and the other at Croydon.
Even before the official openings crowds gathered outside to be first in and snap up bargain ranges. The Croydon inaugural brings to 18 the number of stores in the UK, and Decathlon plan to have 50 branches by end of next year – a tough target, but the brand and its budget prices and product excellence has made Decathlon a force in sports retailing.
Secret of the group’s success is great product knowledge and passionate staff who are mainly sports participants, which means they can advise customers best. Some of Decathlon’s ski gear is sensational – and most of it has been tried and tested by the Good Ski Guide, including a pair of skis for first timers with a price of £119, including bindings.
The stores have the complete range and we at GSG have also tried and tested the group’s socks, thermal vests and helmets, all of which retail at sometimes are half the price of ski retailers.
