NEWS EXCLUSIVE – John Hill reports from Austria’s new biggest ski circuit.
As Good Ski Guide forecast last year, Austria will have a monster new ski circuit this coming season as the new-built Tirol-S gondola connects the resort of Fieberbrunn in the Tirol to the Saalbach Ski Circus over the mountains in Salzburg region, giving a massive 270km of pistes, mainly with snow canons.
The new circuit has a tongue-twisting name of the Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn Ski Circus, and boasts 100km more runs than the SkiWelt area in the Tirol. And now there is talk that the new super circuit will grow in future to join with the neighbouring, Zell am See Kaprun 140km circuit – making it Europe’s third-biggest region after France’s Trois Vallees and the Portes du Soleil.
The new Saalbach link up will be by a 10-seat gondola from the valley station at Reckmoos South in Fieberbrunn up to the mountain station Reiterkogel at 1819m above Hinterglemm. The creation of the new 3.5km long ‘Vierstadlalm’ red piste will take skiers and boarders from the top of Reiterkogel. Opening in December.
Tirol Tourism Director Josef Margreiter told GSG “As yes. We Austrians are becoming more competitive on ski mileage than the French would wish – and we have the best quality too.”
