Vitosha is the most popular Bulgarian resort because it’s only a 40-minute drive from the capital, Sofia. It is purpose built with sad Stalinist architecture predominating, but this is mitigated by outstanding views of the valley below and the gorgeous capital. There’s only about 60km of runs, but the lift network has been modernised with some state-of-the-art Doppelmayrs, though the piste grooming is not so expert. The town is a fabulous location if you are combining your visit with capital and culture, less so of pure ski mileage is all you’re after.
